You’ve no doubt already tried traditional weight loss products and diets and come to the same conclusion that many of us have, realising that these just don’t work.

And if you’ve done any research yourself on the internet, you’ll also no doubt know that more than 90% of those who lose weight on dieting, put it all back again.

The reality is that low calorie diets switch your body metabolism to conserve energy, which means your body actually holds on to calories, instead of burning them to boost your energy.

Let me be clear on one thing.

You have to understand that your weight problem is not in any way your fault. People are often caught in patterns that bring negative influences into their life, which can affect both their psychological and physiological well-being.

For example, you might have a genetic weakness that means your body is not naturally producing a key enzyme that supports energy production. This can make you feel tired and exhausted all the time, while your body is full of energy, stored as a fat.

But without finding out about this genetic weakness and addressing it with an active ingredient, you are not going to be able to achieve long term weight loss, or feel great.

The question no one wants to answer

Probably the most serious flaw of the weight loss products and diets, is that they rest on the fact that they do not question the reason behind your weight gain and consequently any weight loss is not sustainable.

The fact is that there is a genuine reason behind your weight gain and unless the cause, or causes are identified and properly addressed, your weight programs and diets are just a waste of time and money.

This is where generic weight loss programs or products completely fail, as they assume we are all the same. However as we all know, there are some people who can seemingly eat what they want whilst never gaining weight, while others only need to look at a cake or biscuit to pile on the pounds!

The reasons for this are all about your body chemistry.

Your weight problem is as individual as you are, because it’s controlled by your own body chemistry and physiology.  Therefore trying to use a ‘one size fits all’ approach will not work for most people.

You see by addressing the problem on a one on one level, you can not only understand your own unique body chemistry, but also you can clearly see the steps you need to take to reducing weight.

Your goal should be fat loss, not weight loss.

Although we talk about losing weight, your real goal is to lose fat. Because, if you just focus on losing body weight, you are also going to lose muscle mass, as well as fat. And that is not a good thing.

Being over 50, your body produces less of the muscle building hormone testosterone, so it’s important to make sure the steps you take towards losing weight are focused on losing fat, not muscle tissue.

Research shows that people who succeed in maintaining their muscle mass, live up to 20 years longer than the average age counterpart. Plus by working on losing fat and retaining muscle mass you will ensure you continue to enjoy life to the full, into your 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s.

The reason that I came to see Dr Ibrahim because I was finding it difficult to go to the corner shop for my newspaper. I was overweight and had high blood pressure and my blood tests showed borderline diabetes on a background of strong family history of diabetes.

In just a few months I had lost nearly 2 stone in weight, my blood pressure had settled down nicely and my blood sugars went back to normal. I am fully mobile and energetic having joined the local gym and swimming pool and am pursuing aerobic classes with the Princess Royal Trust.

Sharief Ibrahim is a consultant physician. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (FRCP) in 2007​. 

Dr Ibrahim was himself overweight​ and suffering from additional medical conditions, when he decided to explore this alternative approach to increasing weight loss and vitality.

"I had been overweight with a couple of medical conditions and total lack of energy. I was unable to walk the 20 minutes from the train station to my house without getting completely out of breath.

My condition deteriorated further as I had to be rushed for two surgical operations, after the second I was fully unconscious for 5 days. Waking up in intensive care unit I felt hopeless and undignified: a wake-up call.

I changed course and started to learn about health and fitness for the first time in my career. This has equipped me with different set of skills: to create and foster health and vitality rather than live with disease. 

I lost 2 stones and my trousers' size dropped to 32 from 38 inches. My symptoms of heartburn and indigestion resolved and left knee arthritis settled. I start running again for the first time in 25 years.

I've now completed more than 80 marathons including London, Paris, Berlin Vienna, Zurich, Swiss alpine, Copenhagen and Rome with an early personal best (PB) of 02:37:26 and a recent PB of 03:02:20

I am the living proof of the Vitality Curve. The common belief that vitality declines with age is certainly false, as I am comfortably running regular marathons in my 60s.

I have transformed my life and want to pass on these skills to help other people take control of their life. I believe every human being deserves to enjoy a happy and healthy life with an abundance of vitality.
