Most conversations about health begin with disease.

We are told to lower our blood sugar to prevent diabetes. Reduce cholesterol to avoid heart disease. Lose weight to decrease the risk of cancer. Exercise to prevent frailty. Improve sleep to reduce stress.

These are all worthwhile goals. However, they share a common theme: they are focused on avoiding loss.

The message is essentially:

“Do these things so that bad things don’t happen.”

While scientifically accurate, it may be one of the least inspiring ways to think about health.

Imagine if financial advisors only talked about avoiding bankruptcy. Imagine if educators only focused on preventing illiteracy. Imagine if parents only encouraged their children not to fail.

Most of us are motivated by the possibility of gaining something valuable, not simply avoiding disaster.

Perhaps it is time to think about metabolic health differently.
