You’ve probably heard two seemingly sensible pieces of advice:

  • “Cut out sugar if you want to lose weight.”
  • “Avoid carbs, especially potatoes and bananas.”

On the surface, this sounds logical. After all, sugar raises blood glucose, insulin rises, and weight gain follows. Simple.

But human biology is rarely that simple.

Because if this were entirely true, populations that traditionally ate potatoes, rice, fruit, and root vegetables would all have been overweight and metabolically unhealthy. Instead, many of them were lean, active, and largely free of modern metabolic disease.

So, what’s going on?

The answer lies not just in what we eat, but how those foods behave in the body.

Not all carbohydrates are created equal

Let’s start with a simple mental picture.

Imagine your bloodstream as a motorway.

  • Processed foods such as white bread, sugary snacks, and soft drinks are like releasing hundreds of cars onto the motorway at once, with no traffic control. Congestion builds rapidly.

Fruit is often the first casualty in weight-loss advice because it contains natural sugars. But this ignores how fruit is packaged.

Whole fruit contains:

  • Fibre
  • Water
  • Micronutrients
  • Plant compounds that influence metabolism

Together, these slow the absorption of sugar and reduce the likelihood of overeating.

However, not all fruit behaves the same.

  • Slightly lower glycaemic response (varies by type and preparation)
  • Higher in beta-carotene
  • Slightly sweeter taste, which can help with cravings

But here’s the key insight:

Preparation matters more than the type.

  • Boiled and cooled potatoes develop resistant starch, lowering their glycaemic impact
  • Roasting or mashing increases digestibility and raises blood sugar more quickly

So, the question is not:

“Should I eat potatoes or sweet potatoes?”

But rather:

“How am I preparing and using them?”

The bridge food concept: A missing piece in weight loss

When people attempt to move from Ultra-processed, high-sugar diets to Low-calorie, high-fibre diets

They often fail not because the advice is wrong, but because the transition is too abrupt.
